Piotr S. Szczepaniak
received the MSc degree in automatic control from the Faculty of Electrical
Engineering of the Technical University of d, Poland, in 1977, and
the PhD in automatic control and DSc (habilitation) in computer science
both from the Technical University of Dresden, Germany, in 1982, and 1990,
respectively.
He is currently Full Professor; title obtained in 2005 from President
of Poland. In the time 1996 - 2003 he was Head of the Institute of Computer
Science of the Technical University of d. Since 2005 he is Dean Faculty
of the Technical Physics, Computer Science and Applied Mathematics. Since
2000 he has also been with Systems Research Institute of the Polish Academy
of Sciences in Warsaw. In 2001, he was appointed by the French Ministry
of National Education to the position of "professeur invite"
at the Universit d'Artois in Bethune, France.
His research experience covers optimal control theory, sensitivity analysis,
and approximation of dynamic time-delay systems. At present, he is working
in the field of computational intelligence (mainly in neural networks,
fuzzy systems and genetic algorithms) and its applications to modeling,
simulation, image analysis, pattern recognition, knowledge extraction,
intelligent internet exploration, fault diagnosis of technical plants,
and development of medical systems.
His publishing activity is evidenced by over one hundred fifty individual
or collective journal papers and conference contributions, as well as
by the edition of books published by Springer-Verlag. Enjoying the individual
support of the European Communities within the TEMPUS-Program he has visited
several universities in Germany (Duisburg, Hanover and Hamburg), in the
Netherlands (Delft), in Italy (Pisa), in Spain (Madrid), as well as in
the United Kingdom (Southampton, Brighton, Manchester, Huddersfield, Liverpool
and Belfast-Jordanstown). The European Communities have also backed up
his individual research carried out at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg
in Germany. He was received as guest scientist by the German National
Research Center for Information Technology (FIRST) in Berlin. He is a
grant-holder of the NATO Scientific Committee and the Spanish Ministry
for Science and Technology in 2002/2003; host institution - Polytechnic
University, Madrid, Spain.
He is a member of the Polish Cybernetic Society, Polish Neural Networks
Society, European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology, Web Intelligence
Consortium, IEEE Signal Processing Society, and the Senior Member of the
IEEE Computer Society.
He is Co-editor-in-Chief of the international Journal of Applied Computer
Science (JACS) published by the Technical University of d, member of
Editorial Boards and Guest Editor of international journals, Chairman
or co-chairman of the international symposia "System-Modeling-Control"
(1998, 2001, 2005, 2007 - Poland), co-chairman of the "Atlantic Web
Intelligence Conference" - AWIC (2003, Spain; 2005, Poland; 2006,
Israel; 2007, France), member of program committees of many conferences,
and organizer of conference sessions (e.g. 15th IMACS World Congress).
He won an award of the Minister of Science, Higher Education and Technology
(1993), and since 1995 he has been Bachelor of the Silver Cross of Merit
received from President of Poland.
